I saw myself in a car with my dad driving while I sat at the back. As we were moving, we saw our traditional family masquerade ahead of us, dressed in black regalia. My dad intended to stop and hand me over to them.
I protested—not because I was afraid, but because I had not yet decided whether I wanted to join the society, and I had not been informed beforehand.
I then got out of the car and later met some followers of the masquerade. I told them I needed time to process the decision.
One of them wanted to flog me, saying it was part of the culture. I jokingly told him that if he flogged me, I wouldn’t give him beer when I was ready to join.
I saw the masquerade from my village, fully dressed in yellow regalia from head to toe. Instead of feeling afraid or running away, I said to myself that I would no longer run from the masquerade. I decided that I would rather negotiate peace with it.
I saw myself sitting inside a bus when I noticed some masquerades approaching from a distance. Immediately, I rolled up my window. The people sitting in the front seats did not roll theirs up.
The masquerades reached the bus and flogged the rolled-up window beside me. I could barely feel the impact of the cane—it didn’t really affect me. Interestingly, they did not touch the people sitting in front, even though their windows were not rolled up.
I was walking with a childhood friend when we arrived at an uncompleted building. Suddenly, a masquerade—the biggest one from my maternal hometown—appeared, followed by a crowd of people.
I quickly ran into one of the rooms of the building to hide and tried to negotiate with the masquerade’s followers, asking them not to flog me with their cane or pursue me.
I then climbed up the wall of the building onto the lintel top. The final steps were difficult, but I managed to reach the top. Although I had asked the people for help and they refused, I still made it.
At the top, I gave money to the people and even to the masquerade. However, the last person’s money fell outside, turning into a broken bottle, which he gladly picked up. Then I realized that the “money” I had given everyone were actually bottles—empty Hennessy bottles.
When I jumped down, one broken bottle caught my slipper. I removed it, separated myself, and went my own way while they went theirs.
I was in my hometown, preparing to bathe but couldn’t find my sponge. My late stepmother appeared and offered me two pairs of slippers; one was white, and it fit me perfectly. I had planned to share a friend’s slippers for school, but now I no longer needed to.
In my grandfather’s house, I saw a baby picture of myself on the wall and thought, “I have come a long way, and I will overcome.” My father’s other children had their adult photos there, but mine was from childhood.
Soon, the whole hometown agreed I would be king—except my own community, which opposed it and tried to impose a condition that didn’t fit my destiny. Then my father transformed into our family’s traditional masquerade and asked me to sing for him. I sang a popular song bearing his title as chief of the masquerade cult, and afterward, he left me.
I saw a woman constantly bullying people in a club setting, using a masquerade to intimidate them. A comedian was also present, making jokes and creating an atmosphere that made the bullying seem humorous or harmless.
Despite the laughs, the oppression was real. Then, a man arrived, clearly prepared for what was happening—he brought a cross with him and stood up to challenge the woman. There was a tense face-off between them, and at that moment, I woke up.
Saw I was in my home town at the sacred masquerade building (a shrine where traditions of my village is been held) I saw my myself sitting by my dad and two short masquerade sitted by our side. One color was black and the other was red. I was not comfortable among them and the situation was giving memory of my childhood ( about 4 years kid) where I once attended shrine during a festival period
